Australian tennis is about to see one of the most significant
changes in its history - National Tennis Player Ratings!
National Tennis Player Ratings provides a common language
for all Australian tennis players to compare skills and competition results
across all States and Territories.
It is a truly national system that can be used to compare tennis playing
standards at all levels of tennis.
Each player is grouped according to a level of play.
Each level is prefixed by the letter N for National.
N1 is the highest national rating that can be attained.
The lowest level is an N20, which is a player learning basic tennis
skills.
With the ratings you can see the progression a player makes from their
first tennis lesson right through to a player of the highest international
standard.
Players, through their state association, local association or TCA coach,
will be able to obtain a provisional National Tennis Player Rating based
on their current playing record. This provisional rating will be recognised
throughout Australia and will give you a starting place when you wish to
first join in a rating event. Ratings events across all levels will start
to be included in tournaments. Local associations and clubs can hold ratings
events for their clubs and invite other associations and clubs to participate
as well.
National Tennis Player Ratings has many benefits for the tennis community. More
often players will play against others of a similar standard. This benefits
the social player through more enjoyable matches and more varied matches
as new opportunities arise to find places to play at an appropriate level.
It also benefits those aspiring to an elite standard, who benefit from
stronger competition and closer matches. The possibility of new styles
of events and formats is opened up increasing further a players enjoyment
of the game. It general it will promote renewed interest and new growth
for the tennis community as a whole.
Tennis Australia has developed National
Tennis Player Ratings as a co-operative venture with the State and
Territory Tennis Associations and Tennis Coaches Australia. All these parties
are working together to ensure that National Tennis Player Ratings has
a unified approach and a national outlook.
