  1. Search Engine Results for Problems

The following are the number of hits returned on Google for issues regarding Hyper-V and VMware.

    • "VMware problems" - 532,000 - First released 1999
    • "Hyper-V problems" - 1,280,000 - First released 2007

  2. Insufficient Backup Capabilities

With SCDPM (System Centre Data Protection Manager) in beta and incompatible with Hyper-V RC 1, the only reliable way to backup is to shutdown a VM and export. This is time consuming and unreliable.

  3. Our Experience has Shown Hyper-V to be Unreliable

    • Export process was a contributing factor to the Exchange Server 2007 corruption
    • Mehmet has had issues with network adaptors being dropped within VMs
    • Hyper-V RC 1 isn't supported by SCDPM Beta

  4. Technology is New and Unproven

    • Still in release candidate/beta stages
    • No definite RTM date
    • Using non-RTM is not proactive in protecting our network

  5. Lacks Features Present in VMware

    • VMotion - for moving VMs without downtime
    • Memory Overcommit - for allocating total of more than physical memory

  6. Opinions

    • "In this case, we strongly suggest that you test Hyper-V in the lab and then try it out in test and development roles before considering production deployments." - John Enck and Thomas Bittman (Gartner) - Article
