[the cutting edge ]

G'day Developers!

I am proud to be able to say that I have been running the Sydney .NET User Group (previously known as the Access and ASP user group) for over 20 years now. During that time we’ve had some great and memorable speakers sharing information about a range of .Net topics. We’ve kept evolving and we’re excited that our User Group is now being recorded and broadcast live by our SSW TV team.

We’ll be celebrating 20 years at this month’s Sydney .Net User Group with speakers from the US, Steve Smith (Wednesday) and Stephen Forte and Chris Sells (Thursday). This month will also feature some great (and expensive) lucky door prizes from Telerik, DevExpress, and Infragistics. You can come Wednesday or Thursday, or come on both days if you’re keen.

3 Day Scrum Training is back!

Intensive Professional Scrum Developer Course

Scrum

Intensive 3-day Professional Scrum Developer course
Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra

Cost: $2995 +GST Pre Paid

Professional Scrum Developer courses teach students how to work in a team, using modern software engineering practices, to develop an increment of potentially releasable functionality using a specific technology platform. Students learn to do so within the Scrum framework doing iterative incremental development.

Classes are exercise-driven, with students working in self-organizing teams to develop "done" increments from Product Backlog items.

Course at a Glance

This 3-day Professional Scrum Developer .NET course is a mix of lecture, demonstration, group discussion, simulation, and hands-on software development. The bulk of the course will be spent working as a team on a case study application delivering increments of new functionality in mini-sprints. Here is the course at a glance:

Scrum

Note: Scrum fundamentals are not covered in this 3-day course. If you are not experienced with Scrum fundamentals, the 5 day course is still available.

Scrum either through working on a Scrum Team or through taking part in a Professional Scrum Foundations course.

Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Never Use Web Forms Again

SSWTV Video

Find out in less than 4 minutes the Top 5 Reasons to ditch Web Forms and move over to MVC already!

#1 Testability – MVC provides true separation of concerns, and makes it easy to test the whole application from Unit Tests to Coded UI Tests.

#2 Instant Pages – Get your admin pages up and running faster than ever with improved scaffolding. Don’t get bogged down doing Create, Edit, Update, Delete.

#3 Better HTML Markup Control – Every layer of obstruction creates new problems down the track. When so much development now involves jQuery or other JavaScript libraries, MVC simplifies development by putting the developer back in charge of the HTML that is actually rendered.

#4 Simpler Debugging - This means that instead of complicated Webform lifecycles, your code either goes into the Route, Controller or View, so you can jump right into coding without an intimate knowledge of the page lifecycle.

#5 Mobile Support – With Adaptive Rendering, MVC allows the same User Interface to Render on Different Devices, so users can check it out on their PC, their Tablet or even their Smart Phone.

Enterprise MVC Apps - 2 part course

Build real world applications from the ground up

MVC

Now running!

Enterprise MVC Apps Part I: Going beyond the demos
Cost: $330 +GST
Format: 1 day

The Model View Controller design pattern has been a proven and effective way of structuring applications for more than 30 years. In 2007, Microsoft introduced ASP.NET MVC to the world and since then, the framework has evolved into a mature and powerful way of writing dynamic web sites and powerful web applications.

ASP.NET MVC provides a great way of structuring your application, ensuring a clean separation of concerns, easy testability, and ultimate control over markup. It is quickly becoming the go-to framework for writing .Net web applications.

Enterprise MVC Apps Part I: Going beyond the demos

This course will introduce you to the latest version of ASP.NET MVC version 4. Throughout the course, attendees will be guided through building a full ASP.NET MVC application from scratch.

IL Weaving crash course

IL Weaving is the modification of a .net assembly through the manipulation of its Common Intermediate Language (IL).

However it is better described by some examples of the things that can be achieved:

Merging assemblies: eg ILMerge or Costura Assembly obfuscation: eg eazfuscator Method timing: eg MethodTimer Aspect Oriented Programming: eg PostSharp or SheepAspect Implementing INotifyPropertyChanged eg NotifyPropertyWeaver Changing .net string comparisons to be case insensitive eg Caseless

I will be walking through how IL Weaving works, how you can leverage weaving tools and how to build tools that can manipulate IL.

About the Presenter

Simon Cropp is a programmer and all round computer nerd who is happily married to the Greek goddess Helen. He works in Canberra Australia, mostly on large government department projects. He works mostly in the Microsoft space but has dabbled in Apple and Linux/Unix. Simon has been programming for 20 years and has some 10 year old code still in production.

He has an interest in keeping fit through mountain biking/running, cross-fit and a little time in the gym and also misses the ocean.

You can visit Simon's blog at http://simoncropp.com/ although it is not currently very active. Simon also has a Github profile and most of the projects he contributes to can be found there.

Simon is currently interested in ILWeaving (with Fody) and SOA (with NServiceBus)

Simon is happy to be contacted at any time via his Twitter or email.

Welcome to SSW

SSW would like to welcome a new employee to the team this month:

Brooke Brooke Rooney
Personal Assistant/Office Administrator - Sydney

Megan Weeks is leaving SSW to move to Texas and in a wonderfully ironic twist of fate, her new replacement, Brooke Rooney, is an American from Knoxville, Tennessee. Having only been at the office for a short time, Brooke is already known for her distinct Southern use of the word y’all, cranking out 6 full pull-ups, and happily exposing her obsession with anything and everything Lord of the Rings.

Brooke is very excited to be a contributing member of the SSW team. She hopes that her positive energy and previous administrative experience will encourage more team effectiveness, and help Adam breathe a little easier each day.
