SQL Server 2005: Advanced Indexing Strategies
Friday 6th October 2006
8:00am - 11:00am

In this session we look at a fast-paced collection of indexing tips and tricks based on an already optimised base table structure. How you create your base table - as well as cluster it - has a big impact on that table's performance.

Once the base table structures have been defined and you have to further improve system performance, where do you look and how do you do this?

We will also talk about targeting both the known and finding the unknown performance problems. Once you know where the problems are we'll go through numerous options to improve the performance using indexes.

The Cutting Edge

G'Day Developers!

Do you always fix it - or at least report it?

Are your Quality Assurance standards clearly understood? In the course of development and testing, programmers will often encounter bugs or problems. How do you deal with these?

You can either:

  1. Pretend you didn't see the problem
  2. Fix it on the spot
  3. Report it so someone else can fix it

The best solution is to use a combination of 2 and 3. If it's a small problem (less than 15 mins) you should fix it on the spot. If it will take more time, you should email the issue so someone else can fix it. While this can cause unforeseen delays, it's better to get 2 things done at 100% than get 4 things done at 75%! This way of approaching problems ensures that errors are not forgotten.

The question is whether you use the 'Tree Approach' to problems or the 'Straight through to Goal approach'. In the Tree Approach, you branch away from your main task and do 2. and 3. when you see a problem. In the Straight to thee Goal Approach you do 1. and only work on your primary task. At SSW we try to balance short term productivity with long term improvements to our website products and processes; We use the Tree Approach - although as a minimum you should at least report issues that arise. Cheers until next time,
