The SSW Getaway
I'm in the USA at the MVP summit and I was told it could
not happen. Trump is the new president of the
USA. After this campaign, I wish I were back at the SSW Getaway.
Once or twice a year the SSW guys and their families (these days
this includes lots of kids!) escape Sydney, Melbourne and
Brisbane to attend the SSW Getaway and spend some time together
outside the office.
During these getaways, we do a bunch of fun activities together
– usually something competitive (like tennis or chess), have a
hearty and delicious meal, and take an epic walk someplace
beautiful. However, my favourite part of these trips is the
presentations. Each SSW-er in attendance puts together a 5 to
10-minute talk about projects they’ve been working on, the
technologies used, and lessons learnt. You’ll have to wait for
my yearly wrap-up blog to find out what they said. 😉

VIDEO: Power BI – Finally I can make decisions based
on facts
SSW's General Manager, Ulysses Maclaren, will take
you through his personal journey of discovery into
the world of Power BI. Many companies have valuable
data, but the challenge is being able to easily
visualize it in a way that allows you to make
decisions. He will show in a live demo how Power BI
allows even non-technical users to produce and share
invaluable reports and dashboards.

.NET to The Power of R1
R is a language for statistical programming that is
widely used among data scientists. Last year
Microsoft purchased Revolution Analytics, a leading
R company. As a result, Microsoft recently released
Visual Studio Tools for R and announced that R is
going to be included in the upcoming SQL Server
2016.
In this session, we will take a look at R from an
introductory point of view and see how the power of
R can be used by .NET developers. Some of the
highlights are:
- What is R and why does it matter?
- A brief look into statistics and visual data
presentation
- R in a nutshell
- "There is no R in Develop, but there is one in
DevelopeR" - R Basics
- Power of R: some basic examples showcasing R
- A brief look at R in SQL Server 2016
- Building a dashboard with ASP.NET MVC and R
(getting data from SQL Server as well as the
internet)
